84-19 comes flying out of the blocks. Part poetry collection, part anti-establishment political memoir, this work by Docteur Cybirdy is aggressive and punchy and will be sure to provoke your emotions and your intellect. While Hippocrates of London was a sensitive, long-form appeal to readers’ hearts and minds, in which Cybirdy’s intimate tales of human suffering and relationships wooed and beckoned the reader, 84-19 is more like a punch in the face, Cybirdy demanding that she be heard – NOW. The urgency and energy of 84-19 is what gives the work its power. To quote punk icon, John Lydon, also known as Johnny Rotten, ‘Anger is an energy’, and it is that punk anger and spirit that Cybirdy is channelling here. The influence of literature was clear in Hippocrates of London, as it is in 84-19, the ‘84’ referring to Orwell’s 1984, which is referenced throughout. In 84-19, however, Cybirdy also uses music in a unique way to punctuate that energy. She uses the songs that provided the soundtrack to her experience of the COVID-19 pandemic to provide context to her poems, adding an urgency to the work that is not often found in poetry. The influence of artists such as Korn, Green Day and Fatboy Slim is reflected in Cybirdy’s aggressive, rhythmic poetic style. There’s no doubt that it’s a unique work, and its energy is hard to deny. When it comes to expressing a coherent political outlook, however, I find it less convincing than Hippocrates. The punkish, slam poetry style is engaging but sometimes can verge on the repetitive and lack some of the substance that a long-form work, such as Hippocrates, can provide. That said, the work is clearly structured in a thoughtful way, and despite a tendency early on to focus too heavily on that angry energy that is so typical of the work, towards the end, having set out her aggrievances, Cybirdy provides some more sensitive pieces that are effective in appealing to the positive sides of human nature. Through pieces such as We’ve Come a Long Way, she offers a positive message that through music and literature we can find love and connection, and the energy to spur us on to fight for a better world. Cybirdy even champions this message evoking classics of American cinema in the shining star of the collection, LOVE YOUR ICYOU. Ultimately, this collection is brave in its goals and its delivery. Even if you don’t agree with everything in the book, the arguments set out by Docteur Cybirdy are unique, entertaining and stimulating enough for it to be worth the read and will open your mind to new concepts and lead you to question what you believe to be empirically true.

We the patient are advised the dosage of this wonderfully powerful book of Rhapsodies is page by page. A document of recent history, written during the covid era, Docteur Cybirdy weaves through a labyrinth of shocking truths, exposing lies, unravelling the complex world of transhumanism, genomic science and bioethics. An epic work of truth to power the 44 poems, together with an episodic essay and Orwellian quotes, opens with an authentic depiction of covid victims. Heartbreakingly expressive, Orwell’s modern-day Winston and Julia set the tone for screams and utterances, a rise and fall of hard-hitting indictments on a global system of control with money at its root. A voice laced in passion and venom thrashes with turmoil as the book moves piece by piece, poem by poem, quote by quote at pace towards a vision of a world with two realities. This subverted reflection of the events of 2019 and beyond is told with courage and integrity, it attempts to reposition our thinking, to provoke a bulwark, as it deconstructs the powerbrokers and agencies who handle our big data, information and our health care systems – the WHO? in Cybirdy’s work. The menacing dangers of binary thinking address the HOW? At times pessimistic in retrospect, poems illuminate sinister attempts by authorities to ‘nudge’ society into compliance and submission, a war of the sixth dimension reminiscent of Noam Chomsky’s Manufacture of Consent. A self-proclaimed cyberpunk, Cybirdy’s diagnosis for humanity is potentially bleak, prepare yourself bad news until, with some relief, the final chapter tells us WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE. A manifesto unfolds, the antidote to toxic global biopolitics. The upbeat tempo of ‘Nobody’s Average’ offers a way out, connecting with the personal, our memories and our hopes that cannot be manipulated nor eliminated. The finale reminds us of the uniqueness of the human condition, of love, epitomised in the last words of the book, Eternal Truth Beauty and Wonder Renewal On our treasured Blue indigo Planet To the end of time. An inspiringly courageous ensemble, this read is both challenging and complex, persuasive and far-reaching. You don’t have to agree with all of this book, or in fact any of it, but in a world of freedom of speech, its place is undeniable. Please follow the instructions for dosage and handle with care.

Dr. Cybirdy's deliberate ambiguity challenges us to confront the systems and structures that shape our society, raising questions about the limits of freedom in an age dominated by information manipulation.
